New container terminal doubles port capacity

The Port of Liman Galata inaugurated its new container terminal this Monday, a €45 million investment that doubles the annual handling capacity to 1.2 million TEUs. This project, carried out in partnership with the European Union, aims to strengthen the port's position as a major logistics hub in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The terminal, equipped with four super-post-Panamax cranes and an automated management system, will reduce vessel turnaround times by 30%. The work lasted 18 months and created 200 direct jobs. "This is a crucial step for our development," said operations director Laetitia Bruneau.

At the same time, the port is modernizing its land transport infrastructure with a new direct rail link to the national network, scheduled for 2026. The first container rotations are expected as early as next month.
